SEO and Pinterest: Everything You Need to Know

SEO and Pinterest: Everything You Need to Know

We have covered why SEO is important for your website, but did you know that SEO is important on Pinterest as well.  The average Pinterest user is using that search bar at the top way more than they are using the site as traditional social media.  In fact, there are more than 5 billion searches per month on the platform.  That means that every pin you add from your website needs to be optimized to come up in those searches first.  After all, you want those 450 million monthly users to find your content and head to your website for more information.

DON’T KNOW WHAT PINTEREST IS? CLICK HERE FOR AN EXPLANATION!

Start with our tips and tricks below for optimizing your Pinterest account and pins.  Before you know it, the referrals from the site will be blowing up your analytics.

Your Profile

  • Make sure you are a business account on the platform to get access to tons of free analytics that will help you to analyze your pins.
  • Optimize your profile with keywords about your business and what you do.
  • Create boards with keyword rich names that relate to your business.
  • Optimize those boards by adding a keyword rich description.
  • Start pinning relevant content to each board from your own site as well as other sites.

The Perfect Pin

  • Make sure you follow our guide for creating the perfect Pinterest graphic here.
  • Create keyword rich descriptions for EVERY pin.  Those from your own site as well as those you pin from other sites. Descriptions can be up to 500 characters, and we recommend using all 500 if you can.
  • Make sure that others pinning your content have access to your keyword rich description.  Do this by adding it to the alt tag on the picture on the back end of your site.
  • Include some incentive to click in your description to optimize click through.

The best advice one can give on Pinterest is to experiment. While SEO rules apply here, they are not the same as on Google.  You will want to explore Pinterest and look into what keywords seem to be working for others. Try their search function and make note of what auto populates as you type in keywords. Utilize the Pinterest Trends tool for keywords that fit your niche. Then do some trial and error. Try different looks with your pins as well as a variety of keywords. You will know when you land on the right combination via your analytics. Once you find that perfect combo, be sure to try to repeat it for other articles on your site.

You are now ready to master SEO and Pinterest.  So, tell us, are you ready to jump into Pinterest with both feet?  Be sure to see our article on what scheduler to use as well then get started with your account and creating that perfect pin.
