Catchy Headlines: Why They Are Important and How to Create Them

May 28, 2019

The internet is a noisy place. Graphics, pop-ups, notifications, and more all compete on the screen for our attention. How do you convince readers that your content is the one worth clicking on? Catchy headlines are the most effective way to draw people in.

Catchy Headlines: Why They Are Important and How to Create Them

For many writers, the headline is an afterthought. This is a mistake! You have poured your knowledge into a well organized, detail-packed article. Preface that post with an equally well thought out headline that will make readers want to learn more. Here are some pointers to help you craft catchy headlines.

Be Clear and Accurate

While it can be tempting to use “click bait” to draw readers to click on your link, it will not help create trust with your readers. Make sure your headline is clear and accurately portrays what your content is about. Respect your reader’s time and prove that you are a valuable resource by delivering what is promised in your catchy headline. Keep your wording clear and concise, and make sure that there are no grammatical or spelling errors in the title.

Make an Attention-Grabbing Promise

Promise your reader something valuable and then deliver it. While you do not want to overpromise, you do want to grab your reader’s attention and prove that this article is worth their time to read. Will they learn a new skill? Will they improve an aspect of their life or business? Or will they hear a story they have never heard before? Teach them something new or share something that is relevant, as promised in the title.

Use Numbers

Structuring your content with lists and checklists is popular, and readers flock to this kind of concise information delivery. When applicable, use numbers in your catchy title to share what readers will gain from your content. For example, which of these titles catches your eye?

The second headline will get more clicks because it promises the reader precise, clearly outlined steps. Content that is written in lists is easier for readers to process and remember, which is why they are more inclined to click on headlines with numbers in them.

Use Catchy Keywords in the Headline

Use strong words to make your headline stand out from the other lists and resources. There are keyword lists that you can find online, but here are some options to help you get started. These words tend to elicit strong reactions from readers and will help make your headline stand out:

  • Reasons
  • Principles
  • New
  • Facts
  • Lessons
  • Ideas
  • Ways
  • Amazing
  • Secrets
  • Effortless
  • Free
  • Guaranteed
  • Tricks
  • Practical

Clear, catchy headlines are key to making sure readers find and click on your content. For more great content writing methods that work, see our post about how long a blog post should be.
