Threads: Meta’s “Twitter-Killer”

August 25, 2023

The Threads Social Media Platform

Ever since Elon Musk purchased Twitter, the world of social media has been in turmoil. Many Twitter users have abandoned the platform over censorship issues, and many competitors sense a gap to be filled. Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has created BlueSky to compete with his old brainchild, and Mark Zuckerberg has similarly jumped into the fray with the launch of the Threads from Meta. Marketed as a sister platform to Instagram, Threads is primarily geared around text-based posts that users can create and react to. The similarity to Twitter is rather clear, and many fans are hyping it up as the “Twitter-Killer.”

The Grand Plan for Threads

Threads, like Musk’s new “X” project, is simply the groundwork for a much larger-scale platform. While initially it will only be linked to Instagram, Threads has been designed to be compatible with interoperable networks. This means that Threads will be able to interact with a multitude of different platforms, even ones that are not owned by Meta. People who do not have Threads accounts will be able to view your posts from other platforms if you so wish, allowing you to effortlessly increase the reach of your content. Using a decentralized program called ActivityPub, Threads will be accessible through any other interoperable platform. If Twitter’s rebrand fails and Threads’ interoperability plan succeeds, Meta will be in a position to dominate the social media sphere with a well-rounded do-everything platform.

The Challenges Facing New Social Media

However, while Twitter’s ambitious rebranding into Elon’s new “X” project has certainly given it a host of hurdles to overcome, Threads has not quite surpassed Twitter in the grand way many seemed to be expecting. Peaking in July and falling off since, the new service’s daily engagement is trailing well short of Twitter’s. If X does become the “everything app” that Elon Musk is proclaiming it will be, Threads might find itself hard-pressed to compete.

Additionally, Threads is looking at legal trouble in Europe as it contends with data gathering laws that have given Facebook trouble in the past. Meta’s tendency to gather large amounts of user data for advertising has been a prickly point when dealing with the EUl, and it looks like this may be the same case with Threads.

Who Will Win the Social Media Arms Race?

With both Threads and Twitter struggling to outdo each other, it is hard to see what will ultimately end up being the better platform. Something to keep in mind is that while both are similar now, both Threads and X will end up filling somewhat different roles if they both are realized to their full potential. Learning about the capabilities of each will help inform you of which might be the better choice for your brand’s marketing. While X is being marketed as an everything app that can handle real-world tasks such as payments and ordering goods and services, Threads is leaning more into the social media aspect and connecting the many disparate layers of the virtual world. Either way, the best course of action for the time being is to wait and see which tech-giant will come out on top in this grudge match.
